If you are searching for Eco Idle car battery, this is probably your first car with the Idle Start-Stop function right? Either the new elegant Perodua Myvi or the Bezza Advance. Yup you are at the right place. In this article, we will briefly explain what is the Eco Idle system and why does it need a different type of battery to operate (and why is it more expensive!).

As a car owner, it is definitely crucial for you to understand how it works so that you may be able to diagnose any issue if anything were to happen in the future. Let’s get started!

Eco Idle System, What It Is?

Eco Idle is Perodua’s term for Start-Stop System, but don’t confuse it with your push start button. That is not a start-stop system (although ‘start stop’ is written on top of the button). Start Stop system is a system where when your car idles (complete stop), stopping at a traffic light for example, the engine will shut off momentarily and it will automatically restart when you release the brakes.

Push start vs start stop

The system is meant to save petrol while your car is not moving. Such a great thing to have in a Perodua car! This technology is usually available only in a >RM100k worth of car. Even the Malaysian’s favorite Honda Civic does not offer this function. You should be proud to have it.

But of course, it comes with a setback. Your car starts more often than a normal car!

With a normal car, you probably start the car in the morning for work, going out for lunch, and traveling back to your home. That is 3-4 times a day. But with the Eco Idle system, your car engine would be restarted on every traffic light stop and even standstill traffic. Instead of 3-4 times, the battery will be used to start the car 10-15 times a day!

That is why the normal battery is not sufficient to support the Eco Idle system. It will damage the battery much sooner. As for this reason, you would need a different type of battery which is called Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB).

The EFB type battery is slightly advance technology that supports more usage cycle, suitable with the Eco Idle system.

Looking for a EFB battery for you Perodua Myvi / Perodua Bezza? We sell it at a cheaper rate than service centers! With FREE delivery and installation to your location.

Ever find yourself with a dead car battery issue? Works just fine yesterday and suddenly your car couldn’t start?

Yup, we have all been there once. And just like you, as someone who knows nothing about car, this problem leaves us all in confusion as to what’s going on with the car. And the worst part, majority of us do not know/save any contact of a foreman. End up calling some friends to help us diagnose the issue.

Even if you manage to get a contact, usually local workshops operates from 9AM until 6PM. If you have a breakdown early in the morning or later at night, you probably won’t be able to get any help anytime soon. Been there, done that.

So today we are going to share with you some tips on getting a temporary fix for this issue.

How To Revive a Dead Car Battery

1. Check Battery Terminal Connections

The first thing that you want to do is to check the terminal connection. Make sure the connections are tight and well connected. Try to move the connection,if it’s movable (can be rotated), means the connection are not perfect.

While doing this, make sure you have switched off your car and to be safe, keep the keys with you.

2. Clean Up Battery Terminal

Clean up any sulfation or dirt to make sure the contact are perfect and ensure efficient power supply. Again, make sure your cars are switched off.

3. Attempt a ‘Jumpstart’

Perform a jumpstart if you have the necessary equipment and tools. Else, try to get help from a neighbour or nearby friends.

Few things that you may need to be really careful with :

– Make sure the it is being done with the right sequence.
– Ensure the ‘donor’ battery size/capacity is bigger than the ‘dead’ battery
– Once done, let you engine runs for 20-30 minutes to recharge your battery
– For cars with a lot of electronics part and features, seek a professional assistance (such as CARPUT)

Causes of Dead Car Battery

1. Reaching It’s Limit

Do you know, an average lifespan of a normal maintenance free car battery is around 1.5-2 years. With a better care, you may extend it’s lifespan up to 2-3 years. But that’s about it. The plates will have lower holding capacity and eventually will need a new replacement.

But in case it dies off earlier, don’t forget to claim for warranty. Most battery manufacturer provide a warranty period of at least 12 months (or 25,000 KM mileage). If it’s faulty within the warranty period, you may claim to get a new battery replacement. (psstt, CARPUT warranty period is up to 18 months!)

2. Forgot To Switch Off Lights

Not just the headlights, sometimes we make some mistake such as not closing the door tight enough, causing the interior light to be left switched on for the entire night. This will drain out the battery.

As for this type of cases, you may not need to change your battery yet. Try to jumpstart and have your car running to recharge the battery with your car alternator. Then only you try to switch off and start again. If failure, probably your battery needs replacement as it no longer able to hold charge.

3. Alternator Did Not / Low Charge

One of another common issue is alternator. The function of a car alternator is to charge your car battery while the engine is running. For older cars, some alternator may need to be replaced. It does not charge as efficient, thus causing the car battery to be always in a lower charged.

If your alternator is faulty, a jumpstart won’t solve your issue. Your car will dies off while you are driving. If you are facing such issue, it is advised for you to call you car insurance and get your car towed to a nearby workshop. In case your car is under a 3rd party insurance with no towing coverage, you can try to check with our price.

Signs of a Weak Car Battery

1. Dimming Headlights

You may be able to notice that your headlights are a little bit dimmer than usual. But it may not be too obvious unless you are particular to changes and details.

2. Weak Crankings

You may face a difficulty in cranking your engine. It may sounds a little bit weaker than usual. Yup, that’s your battery in low health/charge.

3. Sulfication on Terminals

Sulfication is another sign of a weakened car battery,

Having a car that won’t start is a real hassle – especially if you’re rushing, don’t have any jumper cables or an extra car to use.

When you bring your car to your workshop, are you even sure they are installing the right car battery for your car?

Car batteries come in as many as 17 different sizes with different configurations of positive terminals (right or left), smaller terminal heads and specifications. Not to mention, there are at least 30 different brands here in Malaysia!

As a rule of thumb, you will want to fit the car battery that meets your car manufacturer’s original specifications.

At Carput, we have worked with different car manufacturers and developed an intelligent car battery matcher to help our customers decide on which car batteries to choose from.

Our car battery matcher instantly filters out car battery sizes that will not fit on your car.

Underspec vs Overspec

The idea of car battery under-specification and over-specification has been around for a long time with mechanics and engineers having different opinions about it.

It’s obvious that installing a car battery with lower specifications than the manufacturer’s recommendations will result in a quick death for the battery, but what about a battery with a higher specification?

A battery with a higher amperage will actually only need more time to complete a full charge from the alternator, which means the alternator is working extra hard to get the battery full.

However, depending on the size of the car battery, we believe that the impact in installing a more powerful battery in your car is pretty minimal.

Regular vs Start-stop Cars

The new invention of start-stop cars came in the last decade or so – but what impact has it made in the car battery world?

What kind of car battery do we need when dealing with these cars? We first have to think about the role of a car battery in a car, which is to provide sufficient energy to start a car.

With a regular car, the car batteries are called to action once for every trip – every time you fire the ignition.

However, with start-stop cars (Perodua Myvi Advance) we are dealing with cars that are automatically shutting the ignition and firing it again at every stop.

A start-stop car kills its engine whenever the car comes to a complete stop and starts the engine again when the brake pedal is released. A start-stop car actually requires a higher-spec car battery because it needs the power to be able to start the car multiple times per trip.

A common example is with the older versions of Perodua Myvis with the newer, start-stop version. Regular Perodua Myvis are traditionally fitted with the NS40ZL size car batteries, but the ones with start-stop function actually have to use the M42 size.

The M42 battery is actually an enhanced flooded battery (EFB) and should not be confused with the NS40ZL battery which is a standard lead-acid battery.

The EFB technology brings an improved charge acceptance and greater cyclic durability when operating in a reduced state of charge, perfect for the start-stop Perodua Myvi.

Check out our list of M42 car batteries here.

Standard vs AGM Batteries

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. This technology is found in Varta Silver Dynamic AGM batteries. AGM technology is designed to handle the toughest electrical loads required in new cars with premium features such as regenerative braking.

It delivers outstanding performance for powerful engines and highly equipped cars. Offers up to 3x extended cycle life compared with a conventional battery. (A conventional lead-acid battery last only about 1-2 years).

Boasts high starting power and reliable performance. Plus, the design ensures the battery will not leak, even if the case is broken. If your car comes with advanced Start-Stop functionality, ideally you will want to install an AGM battery because a conventional car battery just won’t suffice.

Check out our list of AGM car batteries here.

The next time you are getting a car battery replacement, be sure to ask your mechanic if he is installing the recommended car battery for you.

Blog, Car Battery Tips
Driving a Continental car like a BMW, Mercedes or Audi is great.

Costs of an AGM car battery, however… Not so great.

But did you know that modern luxury cars require an AGM car battery and not the regular one?

Does it really have to be that way?

Well, it turns out, you can get a replacement Varta AGM car battery at a fraction of the price official service centres are selling…

…that saves you at least RM600 for that same peace of mind. And here, you will learn what an AGM car battery is (you get what you pay for)…and exactly how you can conveniently get it delivered to your doorstep.AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. This technology is found in Varta Silver Dynamic AGM batteries. AGM technology is designed to handle the toughest electrical loads required in new cars with premium features such as regenerative braking. Now, this is crazy:

The key feature of this technology is the absorbent Glass Mat material which holds the battery’s acid like a sponge to ensure constant contact between the plates and the absorbed electrolyte.

But you’re probably wondering:

“Does my car really need such battery with advanced technology?” This is especially important if you own a luxury car which you probably take for a cruise only during the weekend. Very likely, that car demands the highest energy due to its extensive accessories.

So, what makes an AGM battery stands out from its flooded lead-acid inferiors?

Here’s the kicker:

It delivers outstanding performance for powerful engines and highly equipped cars. Offers up to 3x extended cycle life compared with a conventional battery. (A conventional lead-acid battery last only about 1-2 years)

And it gets better:

Boasts high starting power and reliable performance. Plus, the design ensures the battery will not leak, even if the case is broken. If your car comes with advanced Start-Stop functionality, ideally you will want to install an AGM battery because a conventional car battery just won’t suffice.

Start-Stop Vehicles

If you drive a Mazda or high-end Toyota models like Vellfire, Alphard, Estima and Wish, most likely these cars are equipped with the start-stop technology. (Not to be confused with engine push start)

That’s not all:

The technology first gained popularity in Europe and the U.S. market in model-year 2013 vehicles. So, your BMWs, Mercedes or Volkswagens are best fitted with an AGM battery.

Start-stop vehicle technology automatically shuts off the engine when your vehicle stops, such as at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, and restarts it quickly and quietly when the clutch is engaged or the brake pedal is released.

But there’s a catch:

When the engine is off, the battery is the sole source of power to all the car’s electrical devices, such as air conditioning, the radio and the navigation system. And, in advanced start-stop systems with features like regenerative braking or passive boost, the battery is stressed even more.

Order Your AGM Battery with CARPUT for Peace of Mind

Here are the prices for AGM batteries as of January 2019:
AGM Varta Silver Dynamic DIN70 – RM1100
AGM Varta Silver Dynamic DIN80 – RM1250
AGM Varta Silver Dynamic DIN90 – RM1400

Of course, prices listed are inclusive of delivery, installation and trade-in of your old battery (Specifications of these AGM batteries are similar to those offered at service centres). To complete the service, we do offer system fault reset on the spot for every AGM battery replacement. That saves you the trouble of bringing your car to the service centre.

The first thing you should know is that a car battery’s lifespan is fixed and there’s nothing you can do to extend it beyond that. But, there are things drivers often do that cause the battery to die early. Learn how to care for your battery and be rewarded with a long battery life.

1. Limit short rides

Shorts distance trips prevent your car’s battery from a full charge cycle. Over the long run, this will reduce the charge capacity of the battery and its lifespan. Instead, go for a long distance drive once a week during the weekend to give the battery a full charge it deserves.

2. Once a month routine inspection

Battery terminals corrode over time, but keeping them clean from buildup is a great way to extend the life of your car battery. Scrub the terminals with a toothbrush dipped in a baking soda and water mixture. Then, using a spray bottle with cold water, rinse the mixture off and follow up with a thorough drying with a clean cloth.

3. Don’t use electronics when idle

Turn off functions like the radio or air conditioner when your engine isn’t running to put less wear and tear on your battery power. Extended periods of idling also can wear a battery down. And not to forget, don’t charge your smartphone before starting your car’s engine.

4. Keep Your Battery Tightly Fastened

A battery that’s not securely fastened could end up vibrating, potentially resulting in internal damage and short circuits. Have your battery terminal checked regularly, especially if you frequently drive on bumpy roads.

5. Check your car’s alternator

If your alternator is bad it will results in ineffective recharging of your battery and dramatically shorten your battery’s lifespan.
No matter how well you maintain your car battery, you can’t always foresee when it may die. That’s not a disaster because you can always count on CARPUT’s trusted car battery assistance if your car battery ever fails on you.

It is important to understand your car battery at the very least the common warning signs of a dying battery. Just keep your eyes open for these symptoms.

1. Can’t remember your last replacement?

Car batteries are the unsung heroes of the car. We never remember to check, service or clean them although it works hard starting our engines every morning. Car batteries, like any other car part have a lifespan.

A good rule of thumb to determine the lifespan of your car battery is 1.5x to 2x of the manufacturer’s warranty. For example, if your last battery change was two years ago on a 12 month warranty battery, your battery is probably living on borrowed time.

2. Check the indicator

Some car batteries have indicators on the top side of the batteries. Like this one – a red indicator means that the battery is healthy and doesn’t need a charge while a white indicator tells you that it’s weak and needs a recharge or to be replaced.

3. Tick Tock

Car battery not only provides the power to start the engine, rather, it powers all the electronics like your power seats, power windows, air conditioning and many more. So if your car battery is failing while the car’s switched off, it may reset the electronics and your clock will go back to 00:00. Also, check your lights! If it’s dimmer than usual, it may be time to call us.

4. Slow engine crank

It takes a lot of power to get your car started, and all that power is produced solely by… you guessed it, your battery. If the battery is on its last legs, you may notice that the engine cranks more slowly than usual. Try turning the ignition key and feel how fast the engine starts up. If it’s slower than usual, you got to get it tested before you’re stranded in your dodgy office car park.

5. You’ve jumped it a lot already

If you have to jump your car more than three times in a single week, it’s time to replace your car battery. The battery no longer has the capacity to hold its charge.
